6D Mark II Mini Review

I was asked by Ben from Perth Camera Store Team Digital to test the new Canon 6D Mark II for a few days and thought I’ll leave a mini review.

– Camera feels nice and balanced in the hand

– Flip screen which is touchscreen is really useful and you can take photos in live view just by touching a spot on the flipscrean and the camera will focus there and take a picture straight away.

– 45 cross type focus points who are still working in really low light. i.e. autofocus is really usable with all points, not just the middle one.

– Image quality is really good from the jpegs I have. Can’t comment on dynamic range and raw files.

– Fast frame rate of 6.5 photos/sec …well fast for me anyway.

– ISO performance is really impressive. Images at 40,000 iso are really usable. Check out some of my prints at Team Digital if you want to see for yourself.

– Silent shutter mode is a little louder than the original 6D

– Thereโ€™s a delay when pressing the menu button before the menu shows. Hope they fix it in a firmware soon.

All in all, the camera is a pleasure to use and definitely an upgrade form the 6D Mark I.

Here are a few photos that show the amazing high iso quality. They also show amazing Jade & Todd from Circus Carnis who were happy to have an impromptu shoot with me. Files are close to coming out of the camera and only have a little brightening and white balance done. For full size, click on the pictures.

Thnx for the review. I own a 5d mk IV and want to buy a second body. It need to add add something new not just for a backup. Is it worth getting the 6d mk II?

    Hi Colin,
The 6D Mark II shines in low light and to my knowledge has a better low light performance than the 5D mark IV, which has better dynamic range. So depending on what shoot, they can compliment each other quite well.
5D mark IV for high quality high resolution
6D Mark II for amazing low light performance
